Criticism as a Form of Manipulation
Most People have difficulty dealing with criticism because they experience it as a personal rejection. Dealing with criticism as a child, from a adult is a one-down position. When you made a mistake, your elders passed judgement on you: "Thomas, you shouldn't have broken your toy. Bad boy!" You were wrong therefore you were bad. Eventually you learned to feel ashamed whenever you were criticized. This is a very powerful form of manipulation used to teach children to obey or conform. Less damaging ways of instructing children in how to behave include:
1. reinforcing appropriate behavior and ignoring unwanted behavior.
2. pointing out what is wrong with the behavior and suggesting a more desirable alternative behavior.
3. modeling appropriate behavior.
